GIDI’s Response to the High Court Judgement

GIDI has made it clear that it welcomes the High Court ruling that the law in Ireland is incompatible with the ECHR. We join with the Judge McKechnie, FLAC and others in calling upon the government to address this issue at the earliest opportunity and alleviate the terrible plight of those seeking to have their true gender properly recognised and their privacy protected. This has been recognised and stated within the Justice McKechnie’s Judgement and is very welcome.

GIDI wishes to pay tribute to Dr Foy for the courage, persistence and great dignity which she displayed throughout her long ordeal and her pursuit of justice.

GIDI also wishes to acknowledge the great work done by the FLAC team over the course of the past ten years and its determination to see this issue through to a satisfactory conclusion.

For more information on the case we would refer the reader to the FLAC Press Release, at www.flac.ie.

Whilst GIDI welcomes the undoubted success of this case and the obvious and welcome efforts on behalf of Dr. Foy, and by extension, all of those affected by the issues involved in the case; we cannot help noticing the continued use of terminologies that are wholly inappropriate when referring to Gender Identity Disorder, especially when that terminology has played such a significant role in ensuring much of the misperception, prejudice and discrimination which surrounds the condition in the first place. We refer here to terms such as Transsexuals and Transgendered. We therefore call on all bodies, media etc. representing those seeking support of whatever kind in regards to Gender Identity Disorder, to only use that terminology which is now recognised by the relevant medical authorities. For more information on this see the IMJ article reproduced within this website.
