Press Statement in Response to those Misrepresenting Gender Identity Disorder/Gender Dysphoria as a Mental Illness and Associating it with Sexual lifestyles and Psychosexual Disorders
GID Ireland feels compelled to make this statement in response to those groups and individuals who persist in misrepresenting Gender Identity Disorder/Gender Dysphoria (GID/GD) as a mental illness and associating the condition with sexual lifestyles and psychosexual disorders.
We wish to make it absolutely clear to all those concerned with and distressed by the claims that Gender Identity Disorder/Gender Dysphoria is a mental illness or mental disorder. GID/GD is NOT a mental illness or mental disorder. This fact will become perfectly clear to those who take the time to actually read the relevant manuals on this condition i.e. DSM IV – V and the ICD-10. And just as importantly, speak with those who have actually been diagnosed with the condition and who are currently undergoing the appropriate treatments.
We also wish to make it clear that GID/GD is NOT a sexual lifestyle or psychosexual disorder and that it is entirely wrong to include this condition under the various “trans” umbrella terms. This association with “trans” is wholly inappropriate harmful, and for some, is causing a great deal of confusion and distress.
These misrepresentations are being made by a number of organisations and individuals claiming to represent people with Gender Identity Disorder. They do not represent us and we call upon them to desist from making their false claims and misrepresentations.
We call upon all those (especially people diagnosed with GID, families, the media and health service providers etc.) who are concerned about these complex and highly sensitive issues, to acquaint themselves with the facts about GID/GD and to ignore the misrepresentations of GID/GD being spread about in the media, which to date have been allowed to go unchallenged.
We call upon all media with an interest in this issue to become better informed and to afford GID Ireland the opportunity to set the record straight on this vitally important issue.
